Making Spicy Beer: Must-Have Homebrewing Supplies

For those that love spicy food and beer, spicy beer is the next big step! It’s refreshing with a kick, perfect for barbecues, fiestas, or just relaxing on a weekend.

If you’ve got the right craft brewer near you, you can pick up a 6-pack of some spicy suds, but there’s another solution too. With all of the homebrewing supplies out on the market, making homemade spicy beer is simple. All you need is a beer kit, the right spicy beer mix, a home bottling kit, some basic kitchen gear, and a bit of patience. This can be a fun (and tasty) hobby or an excellent gift idea for chiliheads! Check out the typical set-up you’ll need below.

The homebrewing beer kit

It all starts here with a home brewing kit. The super-popular Brooklyn Brew Beer Making Kit contains a home glass fermenter or keg along with the homebrewing supplies you need for sanitizing and brewing. There are other options out there, but the Brooklyn Brew variety is well-known for making quality beer. Plus, as you’ll see, they’ve got a tasty beer mix befitting our love of peppers.

That being said, the typical kits come with a beer mix more universal than something spicy. The one above is an Everyday IPA, so you’ll definitely need to pick up a spicy option separately.

The spicy beer mix

Depending on the homebrewing solution you’ve chosen, you’ll want to make sure the beer mix you buy will work with the system. Here we’ll stick with Brooklyn Brew since they make a very tasty spicy mix,  the Brooklyn Brew Shop, Jalapeño Saison. It’s a Belgian style ale with a mild kick, like you’d expect from something with jalapeño pepper and agave. These tend to go out of stock online, so be sure to pick up a few if you want to have spicy beer available at all times!

The kitchen gear

Brewing will take a few pieces of kitchen equipment as well: a stock pot (think 6 – 8 quart sized), a funnel (plastic is fine), and a mesh sieveor strainer.

Most well-equipped kitchens will already have these pieces of kitchen gear. If not, they are easy to find, and not too pricy. If you are looking to make homebrewing spicy beer a hobby, then you’ll definitely need to pick these up. They’ll get lots of use.

A home bottling kit

Some homebrewing kits come with a few bottles to begin with, but many don’t. You’ll want to pick up a bottling kit so that you can save these beers for just the right occasion. A popular option is the Mr. Beer Deluxe Beer Bottling System. These bottles are reusable, so one kit will last for some time.

When you’ve got these pieces, the real fun begins. Take a look at this video to see what to expect. Really with these homebrewing supplies and a little dedication, you’ll be drinking your own homemade spicy beer in no time.
